Production of ICC Profiles in Digital Proofing

The superiority of the digital proofing system lies in its use of color management technology, high-end color inkjet printing technology, and the use of professional digital proofing software and precise spectrophotometer of ICC color management to accurately calculate the color space. Realize color conversion in different color spaces to achieve the consistency of digital proofing and printing proofing.

Producing a device color profile that conforms to ICC standards is one of the most important steps in implementing a color management process. Here is how to create a digital proofing profile based on the ICC standard.

First, establish an ICC Profile that reflects print suitability

It is particularly important to establish an ICC Profile that reflects the suitability of printing. Standardization and standardization of printing conditions are the basis of color management. Reflecting the standard and standardized printed ICC profile is the basic condition for digital proofing. Therefore, the color of digital proofing is necessary. Management must first establish a standardized printing status. Based on this, the ICC profile generated can accurately reflect the ability of equipment and printed materials to express color. The digital proofing thus produced is truly practical in practical production.

The standardization and standardization of printing are as follows.

1. Make a digital proofing test (Figure 1). This beta version includes the determination of print quality indicators (such as field density, K value and dot gain, etc.) and the ECI2002 color standard.

2. The film output by the photo-composing machine requires the quality standard of the output film. The film output requires an error of ±1% at each point and a maximum density of ≥ 4.0, and the output dot curve is a straight line.

3. The printing plate reaches the best quality standard for printing. 3% - 98% of the outlets appear.

4. Printing with Heidelberg [Product Newsroom] CD102, strictly controlling the printing process conditions. The printing process parameters are shown in Table 1.

5. Use software Profile maker and eye-one spectrophotometer to test the L*a*b* values of each color block of ECI2002, and generate an ICC profile file that reflects printability. Because the printed color standard ECI2002 provides a comparison of standards and specifications, this lays the foundation for digital proofing to accurately simulate printed colors.

Second, establish an ICC Profile that reflects printability

The quality of digital proofing is closely related to print software, printers, ink, and paper. Establishing a printer's ICC Profile must be the best match. In general, special digital proofing paper and matching inks are selected.

1. Experimental conditions

Hardware composition

1EPSON STYLUS 10600 color inkjet printer.

2EYE-ONE spectrophotometer 1 set.

Software composition

1 Founder smooth color management software, and software Profile maker5.0 to generate ICC files.

2Windows XP operating system software.

Printing material

1 paper: EPSON digital proofing paper, 60mm web.

2 Ink: EPSON's original six-color ink.

2. Experimental methods

To create an ICC Profile that reflects printability, the basic linearization of the printer must first be established. It determines the physical properties of the paper and ink, and optimizes the total amount of ink and the amount of ink in a single channel. A small amount of ink gets as large a color density as possible, which provides the basis and optimization characteristics for creating a printer paper ICC profile file, thereby establishing the basis for color management. Take Founder Flow as an example, that is, print a four-color gray scale directly and test it with a spectrophotometer to directly generate the basic linearity of the printer. Second, the total ink volume is printed, and the total ink volume of the printer is determined from the printed sample sheet.

After doing the basic linearization, first print out the ECI2002 color standard and test its color block L*a*b* with a spectrophotometer, and then generate a printability ICC Profile file through the profile maker software.

Third, establish an ICC profile file that reflects proofing

Earlier we have obtained an ICC Profile that reflects the characteristics of the printing process and an ICC profile that reflects the characteristics of the color printer. The two files are placed into the square stream (see Figure 2), using the color management module (CMM) in the stream to match the files, so that the digital proofing simulates the printed color gamut. However, only one color space conversion can not be converted accurately, and the ICC file of the printer needs to be modified and edited several times according to actual conditions. The dot gain rate, gray balance data, UCR and GCR parameters of the ICC file can be modified. The total ink volume of the ink, etc., can also be adjusted to the four-color curve of yellow, blue, green, and black, respectively, and finally the printed printed sheets and prints are matched to create an ICC Profile that reflects the final effect.

Fourth, the conclusion

Through practice, we can see that in order to make digital proofing consistent with printed matter, we have the following experience:

1. When providing ECI2002 color proofs, the state of the printing press is as stable as possible during the entire printing process to ensure that the printed matter can match the proofing effect.

2. The printed material should be stable. After the paper and ink materials are changed, ICC Profile files that reflect the performance of the printer need to be re-created. The paper and ink used by the printer should also be stable. Once a condition has changed, the printer's ICC Profile file must be recreated.

3. The printer's properties file needs to produce a series of different black version of the generated profile to adapt to different image types.

4. The digital proofing ICC profile is not always good. In order to ensure the consistency of the simulation results, a new ICC file with a slight adjustment of the black curve is generally made 3 to 6 months.
