I finally made an appointment for a date that once felt impossibly far away, and I let it slip out of my mind. But when I checked my calendar today, I realized the day had actually arrived. My appointment was set for this Friday.
Reader, don’t worry — I canceled it. I have asthma, and with rising COVID-19 cases in my area, I just didn’t feel it was worth the risk. But what really caught me off guard was how close I came to convincing myself to go through with it. It’s strange how quickly the rules we set for ourselves can start to feel less certain, especially when the pandemic shows no sign of slowing down.
I’ve always been pretty strict about lockdown measures. Friends joke that they’ll go to a restaurant just to watch me freak out. A few weeks ago, I even wiped an eggplant with a Clorox wipe before putting it in the fridge. So the fact that I was seriously considering a trip to the salon — which is ranked a 7 out of 10 on the risk scale — gave me pause. It felt like a small but significant crack in my usual caution.
We’ve all been through a lot over the past four months. The U.S. has been living in a pandemic for almost a year now, and the fatigue is real.
