The classic in educational toys: the past and future of building blocks

[ Chinese and foreign toy network February 21st] According to " Chinese and foreign toy manufacturing " February 2012 issue (text / the magazine invited writer Wood Yi Yang): talking about educational toys , will inevitably think of building blocks. In the field of international children's education research, including game learning, building blocks are hailed as the most versatile "players", covering almost every aspect of cognitive development. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to call the building blocks a classic in educational toys.

As time goes by, classic toys will always show their long-lasting vitality. There are two main reasons for the generalization of building blocks toys . On the one hand, they satisfy the characteristics of children's imagination games and are accepted by the general parents. On the other hand, the structural characteristics of any combination of them make it interesting for almost all children. Therefore, it is necessary for us to delve into the game and structural characteristics of building blocks toys, and I believe that it will bring useful inspiration to toy sales and toy designers.

The evolution of building blocks

Building block toys were born in Germany 100 years ago. Friedrich Frobel (1782-1852) was the first educator to invent wooden building blocks and set the theory of building blocks. His stacked blocks were still used as basic toys for children in many countries. The Frobel building blocks are composed of three basic shapes: a circle, a triangle and a quadrangle. With these blocks, a variety of different shapes such as castles and houses can be stacked, and all the blocks can be put together to form a beautiful cube.

In 1901, the Englishman Frank Hornby invented the assembled building blocks called "mechanics" and applied for a patent. The assembly consists of hundreds of different shapes, perforated metal strips, plates and bolts, nuts, wheels, gears, connecting blocks, etc., which can be assembled into numerous architectural models and mechanical equipment models. The metal strip, the face of the board is 1/2 inch (12.7 mm), and the nut and bolt use 5/32 inch (3.969 mm) thread. A screwdriver and a small wrench are required to assemble the toy. Currently, meccano toys still have thousands of fans around the world.

In 1932, Lego bricks created by ole kirk christiansen in Billund, Denmark, are now synonymous with building blocks. In the past, Lego was also producing wooden stacked blocks. After the Second World War, with the popularization of plastic products, Lego blocks were changed from plastics. In 1949, the first Lego plastic plug-in blocks came out. These building blocks have 4 to 8 hollow snaps on the top that allow them to “automatically join particles” without the use of tools, completing a number of different models.

The active building blocks are made up of the addition of the driving device on the basis of the assembled building blocks and the plug-in building blocks. At present, there are mainly electric, remote control, program control and the like. Active building blocks can better reflect the dynamic things in the social living environment and have a stronger appeal to the players.
