Scientists use 3D printer to create "mini liver"

According to the British Daily Mail report, at present, Organovo, California, uses a 3D printer to manufacture a miniature liver organ with a depth of only 0.5 millimeters and a width of 4 millimeters. Protein, salt and drugs are delivered throughout the body.

Organovo used a 3D printer to print about 20 layers of living cells layer by layer, thus creating this kind of micro-organ, which accompanied the cells from the blood vessels to the liver organs to deliver nutrients and oxygen. Crucially, the addition of blood cells means that this 3D cellular tissue can survive for more than 5 days.

Miniature liver organs form a great contrast with 2D cultured cells. The latter is based on single-layer or double-layer cells and can only survive for 2 days. It does not have the unique function of Organovo's development of miniature livers. The company will work on developing organs of real size that can be transplanted. At present, this miniature liver can produce albumin, as well as cholesterol and cytochrome P450s, which can metabolize drugs in liver organs and is an enzyme with detoxification effect. .

The true structure and function of the miniature liver organs combined with the hepatocyte layer and hepatic stellate cell layer can have a positive impact on the study of infectious diseases or monitor drug therapy. It can perform blood filtration, metabolism and delivery of drugs, and produce some proteins essential for homeostasis.
