Christmas Tree Number Craft

I absolutely adore coming up with fun learning activities during Christmas because it’s incredibly easy to capture kids' interest when you tie it to festive themes like baubles and presents. There are countless ways to sneak in learning opportunities without kids even realizing it—from helping them write a letter to Santa to following recipes while making yummy treats like mince pies. This year, my twin girls, who are three years old, showed a particular interest in learning about numbers. They already know how to count to ten quite well and are starting to recognize a few numbers. To help them connect counting with numbers, I came up with this simple yet engaging Christmas tree activity. It turned out to be a hit and could easily be adjusted for older kids too. To start, I cut out a simple Christmas tree shape from green cardstock and gathered some supplies. I had some glittery numbers and numbered circles from an office supply store. For this activity, you’ll need: - Scissors - Stickers with numbers - Green card or thick paper  The idea was straightforward: the kids would pick a number sticker and attach it to the tree, then add the corresponding number of bauble stickers. If you don’t have numbered stickers, just using plain baubles still works great for practicing counting skills. While working on this project, I noticed that my twins approached it differently. Charlotte was super focused and enjoyed sticking to one color per number. She even took it further than planned, insisting we continue until we reached ten. Meanwhile, Rose preferred decorating her tree with colorful stickers and wasn’t as interested in the counting aspect. But even her version—just sticking the numbers onto the tree—was valuable since she kept asking me what each number was called.  Charlotte was particularly meticulous about arranging her baubles neatly. Once we completed each tree, we’d recount the baubles together to reinforce the concept. By the time we got to the number ten, I had to step in and help finish it since both girls’ focus was waning. In the end, the completed trees looked fantastic and could make a lovely holiday decoration. The girls insisted on adding stars on top, which I thought was a great idea—maybe we'll do that next and hang them up in their room. For older kids, you could take this activity a step further by challenging them to use two colors of bauble stickers to create combinations that equal ten or explore patterns like doubles. It’s amazing how something as simple as decorating a tree can turn into such a meaningful learning experience. Overall, this activity reminded me how adaptable and creative kids can be. Even when they veer off course, there’s always a way to tweak things to keep them engaged. Whether it’s counting, recognizing numbers, or simply fostering creativity, Christmas provides endless opportunities to weave learning into playtime.
