Christmas Tree Number Craft

I absolutely love brainstorming learning activities around Christmas time because it’s so effortless to capture kids’ interest when you tie it to festive themes like ornaments and gifts. There are countless ways to sneak in education without children realizing they’re learning—whether it’s writing a letter to Santa or following instructions to bake mince pies. You’ll need: - Scissors - Number stickers - Green card or thick paper *(Insert image here showing materials laid out neatly on a table)* My twin girls are three years old, and they’ve been super curious about numbers lately. They already know how to count up to ten and recognize a few digits. I wanted them to connect counting with specific numbers, so this Christmas tree activity turned out to be a great fit. I cut out a simple tree shape from cardstock and grabbed some number stickers I had lying around. Some were large, sparkly numbers, while others were circular ones meant for office supplies. The twins placed a number sticker on their tree and then matched it with the correct number of bauble-shaped stickers. Even if you don’t have numbered circles, just practicing counting works wonders! When working with the twins, I noticed that one tends to dive deeper into the activity than the other. Charlotte adored this game; initially, I planned to stop at five, but she insisted on continuing until we reached ten. Meanwhile, Rose was fixated on using only pink and purple stickers for her tree, so I set aside pre-cut trees for her to decorate freely. Don’t stress if your kids veer off track—they’re still learning, even if they’re doing things differently than expected. Rose kept asking me about each number as she stuck them on, reinforcing her number recognition. I didn’t mind how Charlotte arranged her stickers—she loved keeping each tree’s design uniform in color. Once we completed each tree, we’d recount the baubles together. By the time we hit ten, I realized Charlotte’s focus was wavering slightly, so I helped finish the last tree myself. These decorated trees would look fantastic as part of a holiday display. The girls begged for star-topped trees, which could easily double as placeholders for the numbers. Tomorrow, I think we’ll add those stars and hang everything on a big sheet of paper for their bedroom wall. For older kids, you could challenge them to use two different colored bauble stickers to create combinations adding up to ten or explore doubling numbers. *(Insert image here showing the finished trees hung on the wall, surrounded by twinkling lights)* This kind of hands-on learning keeps everyone engaged while tapping into the joy of the season. It’s amazing how such simple activities can spark curiosity and reinforce foundational skills without feeling like a chore!
