Pre-press technology plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of printed materials. If pre-press issues are not properly addressed, it can lead to poor print results. In this article, I’ll outline ten key points that should be carefully considered before sending your design to print.
First, make sure that all text and content are at least 3mm away from the cutting line. This prevents important elements from being accidentally trimmed during the cutting process.
Second, convert any text in your design into curves. This helps avoid issues like missing characters or garbled text when the file is output for printing, especially if the original font isn’t available on the printer’s system.
Avoid using system fonts when entering text, as they may cause white nodes at the intersections of strokes. If you notice such issues, it’s likely due to a system font or a font not suitable for print. Replace it with a more reliable font.
When working with text in Photoshop or other bitmap-based software, be aware that it may appear blurry when printed. To prevent this, always use vector-based text whenever possible.
For any line art or color blocks you create, ensure that the stroke thickness is at least 0.1mm. Otherwise, the lines may not print clearly or could even disappear entirely.
Do not set a "gradient width" for any gradient objects. Different CTP (Computer-to-Plate) systems interpret gradients differently, which can result in incomplete or faded edges.
If images are not properly processed or are in the wrong format, they may not print correctly. Avoid using RGB images or low-resolution files (below 300 DPI). Always convert images to CMYK for print. Also, check if any frames are locked—unlocked frames may cause elements to be lost during precise cutting.
In CorelDRAW 9, applying gradients or interactive effects (like shadows or 3D effects) can sometimes cause issues during imposition. Rotating the design might misalign the gradient or cause effects to disappear. After applying effects, separate them and re-rasterize the image if needed. For example, if a shadow is applied over a colored object, adjust the shadow color accordingly. If the background is yellow, add some yellow to the black shadow (e.g., C=0, Y=80, M=0, K=100) to prevent a gray layer from appearing. Similarly, for a magenta-to-black gradient, change the black to C=0, Y=0, M=100, K=100 to avoid unwanted gray tones.
These are just a few of the critical pre-press considerations that every designer should keep in mind. By addressing these points before sending your work to print, you can significantly reduce errors and ensure a smoother production process. Taking the time to review and prepare your files properly will save you time, money, and frustration down the line.
