In recent years, consumer disputes in the furniture market have gone beyond issues like cracking, peeling, and formaldehyde emissions. Words like "cancer" and "toxic" are increasingly linked to the very furniture we live with every day. The disorder in the home furnishings market has become one of the main reasons consumers end up "bringing the wolf into the room." Recently, the Beijing Market Association introduced three self-regulatory norms, including the "Beijing Home Furnishing Self-discipline Code," at its first general meeting. This code clearly states that all products entering the market must provide a manufacturer's production license, product quality report, test reports, and user manuals that meet national standards for hazardous substances in interior decoration materials.
The introduction of these regulations means that in the future, all furniture sold in the market will need to present four "identity documents." Consumers can request sellers to show these documents when purchasing furniture to ensure safe consumption. According to an official from the Beijing Market Association, when buying furniture, consumers should proactively ask for these documents to guarantee that the products they purchase are legitimate and of high quality.
The new specifications also place a strong emphasis on quality management. They include annual inspections for goods entering the market, strict quality control measures, and the removal of counterfeit or substandard products. When a merchant wants to change or expand their product range, they must file a report with the market authority.
Price is another major concern for consumers. The regulations require the market to appoint price managers to strengthen transaction supervision and ensure fair and equal trading. The market must monitor operators to display clear price tags and use labels approved by the Beijing Municipal Price Bureau. Operators are required to fill in the product names accurately and issue sales contracts, receipts, or invoices. They are also prohibited from misleading customers or devaluing other markets in any way.
Market operators are also expected to create a positive shopping environment. The code outlines requirements for environmental management, such as providing complete public facilities like water, electricity, and fire safety, as well as offering comfortable rest areas for shoppers.
According to reports, the City Consumers Association received 594 furniture-related complaints in the first half of this year—an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year. A recent survey conducted jointly by relevant departments and CCTV-2 found that 46 out of 92 households in Beijing had excessive formaldehyde levels in the main bedroom. Coincidentally, the Beijing Consumers Association recently highlighted that furniture-related indoor pollution complaints are on the rise. It is believed that harmful gas emissions from furniture contribute toè¶…æ ‡ (excessive) concentrations of pollutants indoors. These findings align with the results of the China Quality Miles Home Air Pollution Survey, which revealed that although the "Furniture Instructions for Use" standard was officially implemented in October this year, only one out of nearly 100 sampled households was familiar with its content.
