Mexico ’s technological innovation requires more resources

Dr. Jose Enrique Villa Rivera, President of the Mexico Science and Technology Council, said at the National Excellent Scientific Researchers Award Ceremony held on the 15th that Mexico ’s resources in the field of scientific and technological innovation are still far from meeting the needs of national development.

Dr. Rivera pointed out that the federal government ’s budget for CONACYT in 2011 increased by 6% over the previous year, about 21 billion pesos. Although the government ’s technology budget is increasing every year, it has never exceeded 0.46% of GDP. Therefore, CONACYT will apply to the Parliament for an additional 1.5 billion pesos to better promote the development of infrastructure technology innovation projects.

He also said that there is still some difficulty in getting more funds next year. Although there are many existing budgets, it is still far from enough for the development of science and technology. He said: "Although we cannot require that the science and technology budget account for 1% of GDP, but we must strive for the joint participation of all agencies and companies engaged in science and technology staff to promote the use of more resources, otherwise we will be difficult to continue development.

A total of 25 Mexican scientists who made outstanding contributions were awarded, and Dr. Rivera encouraged them to work harder and creatively. At present, the number of researchers in Mexico's existing national series is 17,631.

This award recognizes scientists who have made important contributions to the national scientific development and is awarded to scientists under the age of 65 in the National Researcher Series who have worked continuously at the third level for more than 15 years.
