Trends in Digital Presses - Report from Drupa 2000

In today's current trend, everything has become fashionable with the addition of "digital". At the Drupa 2000 exhibition in Germany, it is no exception. Digital printers are everywhere, but digital printing machines are after all traditional. The printing press has a fundamental difference in order to adapt to the needs of personalized printing and is suitable for a new type of printing press with an ultra-short version (500 copies - 2,000 copies or less).

The earliest digital printers were developed from copiers and high-speed copiers using CCD technology to digital copiers. As early as 10 years ago, Xerox Corporation launched the DocuTech 135, a black-and-white high-speed copier (8,100 prints per hour, A3), and achieved great success in the market, forcing traditional black and white offset presses to shrink.

In this exhibition, Xerox presented a new generation of DocuTech 2000 series of black and white digital printers, including DocuTech 65 (3,900 prints per hour), DocuTech 6100, DocuTech 6135 (8,100 impressions per hour), and DocuTech 6155 (9300 per hour (print) and DocuTech 6180 (10800 per hour).

Dainippon Screen also launched the Truepress V200, a black-and-white digital press, at an exhibition speed of 200 pages per minute (12,000 impressions per hour), which exceeds the Xerox DocuTech 6180. The V200 digital press has an accuracy of 600 dpi and can be printed on both sides.

Heidelberg Press Co., Ltd. purchased Kodak's office photocopying department and introduced the Digimaster 9110 black-and-white digital press at the exhibition. The printing speed is 110 pages per minute (ie, 6600 prints per hour). Compared with Xerox and screens, there is a significant gap in technology.

Israel's Indigo company introduced the new black and white digital printing machine Ebony type at the exhibition. The printing accuracy can reach 800dip and the printing speed is 8000 printing per hour.

The Xeikon company in Belgium also launched the 7000 black-and-white digital press at the exhibition. This is a new model developed and developed after the acquisition of the French company Nipson.

Why Xerox's black and white digital presses sold nearly 200,000 units in the market, and in the absolute case, companies such as Heidelberg, Screen, Indigo, and Xeikon also entered the market and developed excellent speed or accuracy. What about Xerox products? This is because with the popularization and development of the Internet, online publishing and online bookstores have been created at the right time. The demand for instant printing and online printing is increasing. Therefore, these black and white digital printing machines are generally equipped with online binding. Machines (such as Japan's Horizon or Belgium's CPbourg or British Setmaster), equipped with a color cover transfer device, can immediately print a variety of publications on site (or download publications from the Internet). This will be a brand new market. The future digital press will be a terminal of the network. At this exhibition, "e-printing" has been proposed as a new concept of online printing.

After the color digital printer was introduced to the market by Israel Indigo in October 1993, it developed a series of color digital offset presses that use electronic liquid inks. It has an e-print Pro type (320mm×464mm, 800dip, 2000 per hour). India) The TurboStream 2000 is equipped with high-speed data processing, printing speeds up to 4,000 impressions per hour. At the exhibition, the company exhibited for the first time a four-color digital printer XB2 (500mm×700mm, 2,000 printing per hour), expanding the digital press to four open formats.

Another giant of digital presses is the Xeikon company in Belgium. In 1994, the company introduced the first color digital printing machine using dry ultra-fine toner, and the DCP320D eight-fold web to a sheet-fed offset press. 320mm, printing speed is 7800 printing per hour), there is DCP500D four-fold roll to sheet-fed offset printing press (width is 500mm), and DCP500SP can print thick paper. In this exhibition, the company introduced the economical single-sheet digital press CSP320D for the first time. This is a four-color digital printer with A3 format (320mm x 470mm). It can print 960-page double-sided color prints per hour with a printing accuracy of 600dpi. It uses Xeikon's proprietary dry ultra-fine toner electronic imaging technology. Electrostatic imaging is performed on a specially designed imaging belt, and the color image is transferred from the rubber belt to the substrate. And its unique double-sided imaging technology, can print 80-300g/m2 paper, but also printing PVC cards or stickers materials.

Xerox's color digital presses have been introduced for 3 years. They mainly include DocuColor 40 (2,400 prints per hour) and DocuColor 12, (720 prints per hour). Although they are slower, they are based on color copiers. However, due to the low price, it has achieved great success in the market. However, both models can only be printed on non-coated paper. At this exhibition, Shi Dong introduced DocuColor 2000 series color digital printers, including DocuColor 2045 (2700 printing per hour) and DocuColor 2060 (3600 printing per hour). The printing precision is 600 dpi, and Xerox is applied. The company's unique IBT (Transfer Rubber Band) technology uses high-accuracy registration by printing four-color toner on a transfer rubber band and then transferring the color image onto the substrate. In this type of color digital printing press, Xerox’s new technology, I-TRACS, is also used. It can analyze various image elements on the print, recognize text, lines or photographs and process them separately. For example, Using different dot technologies for different image elements greatly improves the quality of printed products.

It can be seen that color digital printers have begun to enter the market, and have gone through eight years from development to maturity. Today, more than 10,000 color digital printers are installed worldwide, and they are showing a trend of rapid growth.
