Pupils dug out grenades as toys

A group of young students in Luotian County, Hubei Province, stumbled upon something far more dangerous than they could have imagined. Nine heavy grenades were discovered by children as if they were just toys, sparking a frantic response from local authorities. On the morning of September 23, officers at Jiuzihe Police Station received an urgent call. A student named Luo Ming, who attends the only primary school in Luojiatun Village, had been playing with what appeared to be a grenade-like object on his way to school. The police quickly mobilized, and the station director, Zeng Liqun, led the team to the school. Upon arrival, the police informed the school staff of the situation. They located Luo Ming, a fourth-grade student, and calmly questioned him. Initially nervous, the boy was reassured by the officers, who said they just wanted to see his "new toy." Under his guidance, the police found the object hidden in the grass near the school — it turned out to be a live grenade. Luo Ming explained that he had found the grenade the previous afternoon while playing on a hillside with other children. At the time, he didn’t know what it was, and neither did the others. He simply picked it up, along with several others, without realizing the danger. The rest of the grenades were taken by other students, but no one knew exactly who had them. To ensure safety, the police launched a full-scale search. With the help of teachers and students, they conducted a thorough sweep of the area. About 40 minutes later, all nine grenades were recovered. The devices were buried under a tree root for years, and it was only after a storm loosened the soil that they became visible. The police emphasized the extreme danger of handling such explosives and reminded students to never touch any suspicious objects. If found, they should immediately report to a teacher or the police. Fortunately, the students had not taken the grenades home, which prevented a potential disaster. The nine grenades have now been safely removed and transferred to the appropriate authorities for further investigation. The police are still looking into how the grenades came to be buried in that location and why they remained there for so long. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of public awareness and vigilance when it comes to unexploded ordnance. It also highlights the quick actions of the local police and school staff in preventing a serious accident.
