Autodesk CTO talks about 3D printing strategy and Spark platform

In a recent interview with 3D printing industry media, Jeff Kowalski, the Chief Technology Officer of Autodesk, shared insights into the company’s evolving strategy in the 3D printing space. He emphasized that the Spark platform is a key initiative aimed at making 3D printing more accessible and efficient for both developers and end-users. “Spark brings together a variety of technologies that Autodesk has been developing over the past 32 years,” Kowalski explained. “We’ve created numerous algorithms across different fields, many of which are highly applicable to 3D printing. While the industry has made impressive progress, there's still a big gap between what’s possible and what’s currently being realized.” This realization led Autodesk to launch the Spark platform—a free, open-source initiative designed to empower the 3D printing community. The goal is to provide a foundation that allows others to build upon, enabling innovation without the need for complex development from scratch. Similar to how Android revolutionized mobile computing by offering an open platform, Spark aims to do the same for 3D printing. To demonstrate its capabilities, Autodesk has developed its own open-source SLA 3D printer. This model serves as a reference point for other companies and enthusiasts who want to leverage the Spark platform. “We don’t plan to manufacture or sell 3D printers ourselves,” Kowalski clarified. “Instead, we’re creating a sample device that showcases what Spark can achieve. Our hope is that others will use this as a starting point to develop their own solutions.” The platform is designed to be inclusive, supporting various 3D printing technologies such as SLA, FDM, and even industrial-grade SLS. Autodesk is also working with partners to introduce an FDM-based model, highlighting the versatility of the Spark ecosystem. Kowalski hinted at upcoming collaborations with major players in the industry, though specific names remain undisclosed. He mentioned that some well-known companies have already joined the initiative, and more announcements are expected soon. One notable example is Local Motors, which recently used the Spark platform to develop a 3D-printed car using FDM technology. “Spark isn’t just about hardware—it’s about creating a comprehensive ecosystem where developers, designers, and makers can collaborate and innovate,” he said. “Our vision is to make 3D printing as intuitive and user-friendly as possible.” One of the main challenges in 3D printing is the complexity involved in designing and preparing models. Autodesk aims to simplify this process by integrating advanced design tools that handle everything from slicing to orientation optimization. Users should be able to simply click “print” and let the system take care of the rest. Kowalski believes that the future of 3D printing lies in accessibility and ease of use. “We don’t think users need to understand technical terms like wall thickness or support structures,” he said. “Spark is designed to eliminate these barriers and make the entire process seamless.” Looking ahead, Autodesk plans to release new 3D printing design software later this year, which will further enhance the user experience. The Spark platform itself is set to launch before the end of the year, with several major companies already on board. As the 3D printing industry continues to evolve, the coming months are expected to bring significant developments. With Autodesk and the Spark platform at the forefront, it’s clear that this is a pivotal moment in the history of additive manufacturing. (Edited)
