Pupils dug out grenades as toys

A group of young students in Luotian County, Hubei Province, accidentally unearthed a dangerous secret while playing near their school. Nine heavy grenades, which they mistakenly believed were toys, were found scattered on a hillside. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community and prompted an urgent response from the Jiuzihe Police Station. On the morning of September 23, the police received a call from a villager reporting that a student had been playing with what appeared to be a grenade. Acting swiftly, the station’s director, Zeng Liqun, led a team to the local primary school to investigate. Upon arrival, they identified the student, Luo Ming, a 10-year-old fourth grader, who was initially nervous but quickly calmed down when told that the police were just curious about his "new toy." Under the boy's guidance, officers discovered one of the grenades hidden in the grass on a nearby hill. It wasn’t long before more were found—nine in total—after a thorough search of the area. The grenades, approximately 20 cm long and 4.5 cm in diameter, were buried under the roots of a large tree. According to the police, the tree’s collapse had exposed the explosives, which had likely been buried for years. Luo Ming explained that he and other children had found the grenades after school the previous day. Thinking they were objects of curiosity, they collected them without realizing the danger. Fortunately, none of the students took the grenades home, and most returned them voluntarily during the police-led investigation. The police conducted safety education sessions with all the students, emphasizing the extreme risks associated with handling such devices. They also reminded the children that if they ever come across something suspicious, they should not touch it and immediately inform an adult or the authorities. The nine grenades have now been safely removed and are being investigated by the police to determine how they ended up in such a location. Authorities are still looking into the origin of the explosives and why they were left in such a vulnerable spot. This incident highlights the importance of public awareness and vigilance, especially in rural areas where old military equipment may still be present. It also serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless items can pose serious threats if not handled properly.
