New laser printed polymer circuit technology lowers electronics manufacturing costs

The Athens Polytechnic University in Greece has just found a way to lower the manufacturing cost of the electronics industry in the future. The researchers successfully used laser printing to manufacture polymer circuits, avoiding the possible damage to the original by traditional etching printing methods. So far, the R & D team has made photoelectric and biosensing circuits using laser printing.

Maria Kandyla of the Athens University of Technology and a group of researchers use laser printing as an alternative to traditional manufacturing methods. The traditional solution etching may cause damage to the board itself, and it takes more effort to dry the droplets at the outer edge. Laser printing avoids these problems because no solvent is needed at all.

The laser passes directly through the upper glass or quartz carrier, reaches the polymer layer, and transfers a portion of the polymer to the receiving substrate. At present, some circuit boards have been made by this method, using polyaniline as the conductive layer material. Although this technology has been put on the agenda, there are still many tasks and problems to be solved, such as whether the laser will change the composition of the polymer and so on.
