Today, the printing industry faces challenges such as lower wages, rising labor costs, and intense competition, which threaten its survival and growth. However, in the same market environment, companies like Jianhao in Taiwan have managed to maintain high production efficiency with fewer staff, leading to increased business scale and attracting envy from many mainland Chinese printing companies. Zhang Changjia, General Manager of Tianjin Evergreen Jianhaoyun Printing Technology Co., Ltd., summarized Jianhao's development: "Jianhao has gone through five major stages—digital experience, digital software, software networking, network cloud, and cloud commercialization. We are currently in the cloud commercialization phase. How will this model be applied in mainland China?"
On June 7, the Evergreen Jianhao Cloud Printing Business Conference was held in Tianjin, marking the official start of cloud commercialization in China. The question remains: how will Evergreen Jianhao achieve cloud commercialization, and what is the industry's reaction? What impact will it have on the commercial printing market in mainland China?
Exploring the Cooperation Model
At the conference, over 1,000 industry professionals attended, including many traditional and digital printing companies. A common concern was “What is the health of Jianhao?†During the event, Zhang shared a practical example that illustrated what Jianhao could do. He presented a beautifully printed butterfly photo album and asked the audience, “How much do you think this album sells for outside?†Responses ranged from 500 to 800 yuan, but one participant guessed 600 yuan.
Zhang then revealed the answer: “I sell it to you for 50 yuan, help deliver it to your store, and still make a profit. You can sell it at 150 yuan, and customers will feel it’s a good deal. You can also make a profit. If your production cost is lower, you can produce it yourself. Otherwise, I can help. If we cooperate, you can use our ERP system, software, and cloud storage for free, and still keep your own domain name and e-commerce website. You can retain your brand identity and operate independently.†In short, “Your existing business can continue, and if you don’t have the resources, you can hand it over to Evergreen.â€
Li Li, from Shenzhen Yonglixing Printing Co., Ltd., expressed interest in this cooperation model: “I know some digital printers are great, but I can't afford them. Now I see a solution.†Zhang responded, “You don’t have equipment, but you want to do this business. In the early stage, I can help you with production, so you can build your customer base and generate revenue. I can teach you how to use the equipment, manage the process, and handle production until you’re ready to purchase your own equipment and take control.â€
This approach targets small-scale printing businesses, especially in commercial and personalized printing. Evergreen uses its ERP system, online transfer tools, editors, and e-commerce platform to manage printing processes and assist partners with unmanageable jobs. The company divides its market into five levels—Jianhao Cloud Printing, Central Factory, Strategic Partners, Store Channels, and Consumers. For the central factory, Evergreen ensures quality, speed, and diversity. For strategic partners, they offer full API access, allowing them to build their own brands and e-commerce platforms. For store channels, Evergreen helps set up e-commerce platforms and provides online tools for order services. Evergreen not only offers products and tools but also training, technology transfer, collaborative ERP development, and rapid online and plant output services.
According to Evergreen Jianhao, the Beijing-Tianjin region alone has a market demand of over 5 billion yuan for its planned product categories. Its current design capacity in Tianjin is 2 billion yuan, with plans to install 30 to 60 HP Indigo offset printing machines. In June, it met with potential partners in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It plans to establish seven central factories nationwide and develop 1,000 franchise stores within a year, covering all of mainland China. According to a 2013 feasibility study, Evergreen Jianhaoyun is expected to reach production in five years and achieve annual sales of 1 billion yuan after production.
Industry Reactions
Although Evergreen's vision is appealing, the industry’s response is mixed. At the press conference, Zhang emphasized he doesn’t intend to compete with peers but wants to collaborate and create new opportunities. However, due to lack of detailed cooperation terms and unclear profit sources, many companies remain cautious. Some questioned whether the platform would eliminate their role in the supply chain. Others worried about becoming dependent on Evergreen’s systems, fearing future high fees. “Why is everything free? Is this a trap?â€
Despite these concerns, some companies are optimistic. Guo Shuzeng from Shanxi Taibao Media said, “Evergreen is a trustworthy large enterprise. We are looking forward to deep cooperation.†Another manager added, “This is a great opportunity to ‘borrow the boat to the sea.’†After the conference, discussions continued between Evergreen and potential partners.
Consolidating Resources
Whether or not the cooperation succeeds, Jianhao’s rise reflects the need for transformation in the printing industry. Many companies seek collaboration as a way to adapt. With the 2013 “Network Invoice Management Measures,†the bill printing industry faced threats. The China Printing Technology Association called for unity and outsourcing non-core businesses to focus on unique strengths. Similarly, Evergreen’s cloud printing model emphasizes resource consolidation.
After the conference, Evergreen announced over 500 interested companies, including traditional and digital printers, as well as distributors without production equipment. Traditional printers bring experience in long-term jobs, while digital printers offer flexibility and cross-over business opportunities. Distributors provide access to a large customer base. Evergreen’s fast order processing and delivery ensure smooth operations, allowing all parties to benefit. Cao Peng from Beijing Printing Institute compared industry participants to “pearls,†saying Evergreen is connecting them through cloud platforms to drive commercialization in mainland China.
While the immediate impact may be limited to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the model could inspire similar initiatives across China. If successful, Evergreen’s multi-language service system could open international markets. From Japan to Europe, the model might find global applications. As an industry media, Printing Technology will continue to track Evergreen’s progress and the development of cloud commercialization in the printing sector.
