High nitrile new packaging materials

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) has excellent gas permeability and excellent resistance to many chemical properties. However, it cannot be melt-processed nor can it be thermoformed to affect the application.

The copolymerization modification of acrylate or styrene monomer to obtain a high nitrile polymer (abbreviated as HNP) not only maintains the excellent performance of the original acrylonitrile, but also significantly improves the processability and can be thermoformed. HNP's transparency, low gas transmission, and excellent chemical resistance make it useful as a packaging resin. In addition, high hardness and low density make it economically competitive with PVC, PETG, PET, and PS in some cases. HNP thermoformed lightweight packaging material, compared with many other competitive materials, shorter production cycle, less waste.

Typically HNP is a copolymer of acrylonitrile:methyl acrylate (75:25). HNP is a shear-sensitive, viscous material that is processed in a similar manner to hard PVC, but has better thermal stability than PVC. Unlike PVC, no corrosive gases are produced during processing, and processing equipment does not require chrome plating. In addition, the maximum linear elongation of HNP at 130°C is 18-25 cm/cm, which is significantly better than that of PVC at 11 cm/cm. The dimensional stability curve of the HNP thermoformed product shows that the elasticity of the HNP resin is reduced to about 145°C. However, due to the high melt strength of HNP, the elasticity of the entire material is evenly distributed even at 145°C.
