Development of Polyethylene/Nylon Laminate Film for Intravenous Drug Bags

In the field requiring the use of intravenous drug bags, the United States has adopted LLDPE/nylon laminated film instead of soft polyvinyl chloride. This substitution has nothing to do with the amount of phthalate plasticizers (released in the pouch) but rather the nature of the application. This application includes pre-mixed antimicrobial solutions that must be frozen to -20°C after packaging to ensure safe transport to the pharmacy. This new packaging eliminates much of the damage when using soft PVC and paves the way for the FDA to approve a new production process.
