I've noticed that many people have a habit of discarding soap once it gets small and unattractive. It's frustrating to watch it shrink, and sometimes we just throw it away without a second thought. But this is clearly wasteful. Fortunately, a new innovation called the **3D Printer Soap01** offers a clever solution. This device allows you to reuse leftover soap, melt it down, and 3D print it into something new—whether it’s a different shape, color, or even with added scents.
According to Emanuele Mulas, the managing director of Wittystore in Ireland, “Soap01 is an affordable desktop 3D printer designed to recycle old soap bars.†He explains, “The core idea is simple: take used soap and turn it into something more than just a cleaning product. We call it art.â€
While there are existing methods for making soap at home, most of them are time-consuming and not very efficient. That’s where Soap01 steps in. You can feed it even the thinnest remnants of soap, and it will print out a fresh bar tailored to your preferences. The design is customizable, and you can add fragrances or colors to make it unique.
The technology behind Soap01 is similar to standard FDM/FFF 3D printers. The process involves melting the soap and extruding it through a nozzle, which moves along the X and Y axes. The print bed moves along the Z axis, and as soon as the melted soap touches the bed, it solidifies quickly.
The top of the printer has a built-in melting and stirring system, preparing the soap for printing. In the second prototype, Wittystore introduced a subtractive manufacturing method alongside the extrusion process. This means they first extrude a thin layer of semi-solid soap, then cut it to match the desired shape. Any leftover material can be reused, making the whole process even more sustainable.
Mulas shared that they plan to launch a Kickstarter campaign this month to fund production. The goal is to release the 3D printer in December 2016. Early backers on Kickstarter will get the chance to purchase the device at a discounted price of €2,500—but only five units will be available. This limited offer makes it an exclusive opportunity for eco-conscious creators and DIY enthusiasts.
