Soap01 desktop 3D printer lets soap back to the oven

I’ve noticed that many of us have this habit—when a bar of soap gets smaller and less appealing, we tend to stop using it or even throw it away. But that’s just wasting perfectly usable material. Fortunately, there's a new solution: the Soap01 3D printer. This innovative device allows you to recycle leftover soap and turn it into something new, like a custom-shaped or colored bar of soap. It’s a smart and eco-friendly way to reduce waste. According to Emanuele Mulas, managing director of Wittystore in Ireland, “Wittystore’s Soap01 is an affordable desktop 3D printer that recycles old soap or soap bars. The basic idea is simple: take used soap, repurpose it, and turn it into something more than just soap—something we call art.” This isn’t the first time people have tried to make their own soap, but traditional methods are often time-consuming and not very efficient. That’s where Soap01 steps in. You simply feed it with any remaining soap, no matter how small or worn out, and it will print a brand-new bar. You can choose the shape, color, and even add scents to customize your soap. The technology behind it is similar to standard FDM/FFF 3D printers, making it both familiar and accessible. The first prototype of Soap01 was built using open-source software and a gantry-style structure. The machine melts and extrudes the soap through a nozzle, which moves along the X and Y axes. The print bed moves along the Z axis, and once the soap touches it, it hardens quickly. The top of the printer also has a melting and mixing chamber to prepare the soap for printing. In the second prototype, Wittystore added a subtractive manufacturing process to complement the extrusion method. As Mulas explained, “We first extrude a thin layer of semi-solid soap, then cut it to match the model’s shape. The leftover soap can be reused again, making the process even more sustainable.” To bring Soap01 to market, Mulas plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign this month, aiming to officially release the 3D printer in December 2016. Early backers will get the chance to purchase it at a discounted price of €2,500, though only five units will be available. It’s an exciting step toward a greener future—one bar of soap at a time.
