Scientists discover suspected new species of bacteria in Antarctic lake water

Recently, Antarctic expedition scientists discovered a new bacterium in a water sample taken from Lake Vostok. It is reported that Lake Vostok, a lake that has been isolated from the world for many years, is covered with a thick layer of ice, and it is this layer of ice that protects the existence of Lake Vostok. In 1989, scientists from the Vostok researchers began their first ice drilling and obtained a sample of the lake water buried deep under ice. In their recent research work, they discovered a bacterium that did not belong to a known range.

Sergei Bulat, a researcher from the Eukaryotic Cytogenetics Laboratory of the St. Petersburg Institute of Nuclear Physics, said that after excluding the possibility of all known pollutants, they did not find a matching species in the global bacterial database. At present, they can only classify this newly discovered bacteria into unidentified living organisms.

Although the researchers found that 86% of the ingredients in the samples were consistent with the organic matter known on the earth, as long as it is less than 90% of bacteria, it is likely to be a new one that has not been discovered before. Species.

Currently, researchers need more samples to verify their conjectures.
